Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university;
  • Current New Mexico PED license appropriate to the teaching assignment;
  • Knowledge base in Braille, low vision, activities of daily living, and transition skills, and Orientation and Mobility skills;  
  • Certification in TVI preferred.

  • Ability to maintain high level of professionalism and confidentiality regarding students, staff, parents, and school matters.

 

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Travels in assigned areas of the RRPS District to provide direct services and/or consultation services to school age children who are blind or visually impaired their parents, teachers, and IEP teams. 
  • Responsibilities include a wide variety of classroom settings and student ages and experiences. 
  • Teach Braille reading and writing, adaptive devices and technology related to Braille, low vision, and activities of daily living. 
  • Contributes to the development of the IEP with goals, modifications, learning styles, etc. 
  • Performs functional vision and learning media assessments on new referrals, annual, and three-year re-evaluations as required. 
  • Recommends appropriate specialized evaluations as needed, such as on-campus, low vision, orientation, and mobility, psychological, assistive technology, and adaptive PE as needed. 
  • Consults with diagnosticians, classroom teachers, students, and parents concerning appropriate evaluations, modifications, and test administration.
  • Assists classroom teachers in adapting materials for students with vision impairment; such as making maps, charts, graphs, enlarging teaching materials.
  • Conducts inservice and/or trainings for classroom staff, district staff, community organizations or other individuals or groups as assigned by supervisor.
  • Provides appropriate instructional classroom activities for students, as well as assists in obtaining modified standardized testing materials. 
  • Performs functional vision and learning media assessments on new referrals, annual, and three-year re-evaluations as required. 
  • Interprets eye medical reports as they related to educational environments.            
  • Coordinates teaching program with site-based goals and district-wide objectives;
  • Arranges physical environment of the classroom for optimum learning and safety of students;
  • Provides accurate delivery of curriculum to students within the scope of teaching assignment;
  • Uses and applies appropriate conflict resolution skills with students;
  • Maintains positive attitude and ensures classroom environment is conducive to student learning;
  • Develops goals and objectives for self, group, and student academic achievement, maintaining documentation to assure accountability;
  • Maintains order in the assigned classroom;
  • Maintains records of student performance and attendance;
  • Completes required reports and report cards within prescribed time frames;
  • Attends staff meetings and in-service training activities and schools; and
  • Competent technology skills;
  • Must have reliable transportation to travel within the district to perform duties of CTVI;
  • Complies with state-approved New Mexico Administrative Code of Ethical Responsibility of the Education Profession and the RRPS Employee Standards of Conduct and upholds and enforces rules, administrative directives and regulations, school board policies, and local, state and federal regulations;
  • Performs related duties consistent with job description and assignment as assigned.

 

Work Hours: Work hours are established in employment contract.  Additional work hours may be assigned by the Director of Special Services for RRPS within parameters of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement.
