Position Summary: 

The Assistant Principal of Special Programs is directly responsible for improving the academic and behavioral performance of Maggie Cordova Elementary School’s students with disabilities. The Assistant Principal of Special Programs manages and coordinates all specialized services including special education, consultation with families and/or outside services, and all other related services. The overarching goal is to help our special education students achieve breakthrough academic achievement, prosocial behaviors and appropriate communication skills, and to ensure that the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) needs of all special education students are met with robust and rigorous strategies. The Assistant Principal of Special Programs reports to the Principal. Consultation with Special Services Special Education Directors and the Director of Counselors as appropriate

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MA or equivalent degree in School Administration;
  • NM 100 Level Administrative License or ability to apply and receive; and
  • Seven (7) years minimum teaching experience, preferably in special education.

  • Knowledge of evidence-based instructional practices for Autism;
  • Knowledge of Trauma Informed Practices in the Schools;
  • Knowledge of SEL Core Competencies SEL Core Competencies;
  • Demonstrates the ability to Identify and implement professional development and support with evidence-based practices on behalf of teaching teams supporting students with behavioral needs; and
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the process for considering District behavioral programs such as Cluster and Desert programs.

Essential Job Responsibilities of Assistant Principal for Special Programs:

  • Knowledge of special education laws, state statutes and rules;
  • Experience with special education discipline and restorative practices;
  • Certified in CPI or non-escalation;
  • Knowledge of teaching methods, curriculum, and education programs designed for students with learning, physical, and behavioral disabilities;
  • Knowledge of medical and psychosocial issues related to individuals with learning, developmental, and/or emotional disabilities;
  • The ability to communicate effectively with parents;
  • A positive, high-energy attitude, and a drive for personal excellence;
  • Flexible attitude, ability to work with urgency;
  • Strong problem solving and strategic thinking skills;
  • Willingness and desire to participate in unexpected projects;
  • Experience managing teachers and providing constructive feedback;
  • Coordinates teaching program with site-based goals and District-wide objectives;
  • Uses and applies appropriate conflict resolution skills with students;
  • Maintains positive attitude and ensures classroom environment is conducive to student learning;
  • Acts in the decision-making role of Principal in his/her absence;
  • Leads committees when interviewing and hiring staff;
  • Serves as Instructional Leader for certified and associate staff;
  • Assist in Master Scheduling decisions;
  • Daily supervision duties in areas where students are present as needed;
  • Utilizes the District's Discipline Matrix and communicates consequences to parents and staff;
  • Responsible for Special Education issues and law compliance;
  • Assists with teacher observations, evaluations, professional development plans, professional growth plans as needed;
  • Leads professional development and Professional Learning Communities for special programs;
  • Monitors daily attendance and truancy issues;
  • Good technology skills;
  • Manage the special education programs for a school of approximately 680 students;
  • Implement, supervise, and facilitate MCE’s intervention programs and curricula;
  • Supervise and coordinate the Individual Education Plan (IEP) and 504 processes;
  • Supervise and coordinate evaluations and related services for students;
  • Coordinate and monitor the Mental Health Services of partner organizations;
  • Chair and conduct manifestation determination meetings and other special education meetings;
  • Ensure the implementation of accommodations in the general education environment;
  • Ensure that student files are in full compliance with all special education;
  • Provide leadership on the school’s Leadership Team;
  • Manage day to day performance of special education teachers and ancillary staff;
  • Toileting, diapering may be required to support teaching staff;
  • Support Principal and Assistant Principal in leading the school and creating a culture of student achievement; 
  • Demonstrates the competencies as required by Regulation Title 6, Chapter 69, Part 7 of the New Mexico Administrative Code Performance Evaluation System Requirements for Principals and Assistant Principals effectiveness as required by Regulation Title 6, Chapter 69, Part 8 of the New Mexico Administrative Code Teacher and School Leader Effectiveness;
  • Complies with state-approved New Mexico Administrative Code of Ethical Responsibility of the Education Profession and the RRPS Employee Standards of Conduct and upholds and enforces rules, administrative directives and regulations, school board policies, and local, state and federal regulations; and
  • Employee may be assigned other duties based on the needs of the district during the term of employment.
